Doubleheaders are usually associated with baseball. But rain Thursday at the Mubadala Citi DC Open forced many players into double duty on Friday. In the afternoon, Hyattsville native Frances Tiafoe beat 18 year-old qualifier Juncheng Shang 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals.
In his evening match which ended close to midnight, second seed Tiafoe was outplayed by England’s Daniel Evans losing 6-4, 7-5. Offering no excuses, Tiafoe said, “I mean, there is not much I can really say. He executed what he wanted to do, and he played exceptional tennis tonight.”
Despite loss in @mubadalacitidc quarters, DMV native @FTiafoe tonight says he feels the love from the fans here: "I've never had that much love playing here ever. Every time I played it was packed. People were going crazy, even there it felt like a grand slam match."@DCNewsNow pic.twitter.com/biDTlatQPx
