In ‘It’s OK To Be Me,’ 10-Year Old Writes About Overcoming Stutter

Claude “Manny” Jennings III, a 10-year-old from Silver Spring, used his stutter as an inspiration for a children’s book. Jennings told his story and encouraged kids to overcome their own challenges in social settings. He motivated others to have fun and to make the most out of who they are.

The book is illustrated by artist Maru Salem-Vargas, with bright colors and pictures to engage the reader. It includes real-life experiences of the elementary school kid. The entirety of the book is from Jennings’ point of view and provides insight into a special story about gaining confidence to speak, especially in situations where it’s difficult.

“Written in sweet and loving words, perfect for reading aloud to the little ones,” the book’s description reads.

“It’s OK to be Me,” was officially published on Jan. 11. After this book, he and his creative team were inspired to kickstart a movement for children. “Confident KIDS Movement” encouraged kids around the nation to become comfortable and positive about the unique differences they carry.

Jennings held a book signing at Live Love Cafe in Laurel where people were able to purchase copies of his book.
