Gov. Larry Hogan announced Wednesday expanded leave incentives for state employees to serve as local election judges for primary and general elections.

For the first time, state contractual employees will be eligible to receive administrative leave for serving as local election judges during primary election day, July 19, and election day, Nov. 8, the press release wrote.

“Election judges play an important role in the democratic process, and state employees have always stepped up to serve,” Hogan said in the press release. “For this election cycle, we are expanding our recruitment efforts to include the primary election, and extending these leave incentives to our contractual employees. It is important for local election boards to get people signed up and trained quickly once they express interest.”

On primary day or any day of early voting, state and contractual employees who serve as election judges will receive 16 hours of administrative leave for each day of service.

On election day, a state holiday, state employees who serve will receive pay, in addition to eight hours of administrative leave. Contractual employees will not be paid and will receive eight hours of administrative leave.
