Initial claims for unemployment filed by Montgomery County residents rose slightly during the week ending Jan. 23.
Last week, 4,844 residents filed initial claims, according to the Maryland Department of Labor (DOL). That is an increase of more than 300 new claims as compared with the prior week’s filings, which ended on Jan. 26. During that week, 4,503 residents filed initial claims. During the week that ended Jan. 9, 3,376 county residents filed initial claims.
Initial claims filed throughout the state rose by slightly less than 3,000. During the week that ended Jan. 23, 44,333 Marylanders filed initial unemployment claims. During the week that ended Jan. 16, 41,596 initial unemployment claims were filed. Marylanders filed 31,513 initial claims during the week that ended Jan. 9, and 11,013 initial claims during the week that ended Jan. 2, according to the Maryland DOL.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national unemployment rate was 6.7% in December 2020.
