Initial claims for unemployment filed by Montgomery County residents fell sharply during the week that ended Nov. 28. Residents filed 1,177 initial claims compared to 1,558 during the week that ended Nov. 21 and 1,797 during the week that ended Nov. 14, according to the Maryland Department of Labor (DOL). A contributing factor for the fall last week could be that Thursday was Thanksgiving Day.
Statewide, the number of initial claims filed last week also dropped. During the week that ended Nov. 28, 12,790 Marylanders filed initial unemployment claims. During the previous week that ended on Nov. 21, 18,916 Maryland residents filed. During the week that ended Nov. 14, 18,440 Marylanders filed initial claims for unemployment. The previous week that ended Nov. 7, 17,254 Marylanders filed initial claims for unemployment. During the week that ended Oct. 31, 18,383 Marylanders had filed initial unemployment claims.
According to the DOL, the state added 10,200 jobs and the unemployment rate increased to 7.8% in October.
