International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day to celebrate achievements of women and falls during Women’s History Month. The first (IWD) occurred in 1911 and was supported by more than a million people.
The theme for International Women’s Day this year is “Break The Bias”, to imagine a gender equal world that is free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.

Governor Hogan notes on Twitter that “Maryland’s history has been shaped by extraordinary female leaders.” One such person is Harriet Tubman, who was born into slavery around 1822 in Maryland’s Eastern Shore. She escaped slavery to Philadelphia in 1849 and became an operator of the Underground Railroad and returned to Maryland at least 13 times to rescue her parents, brothers, family members, and friends to guide them to freedom.
Maryland’s Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center opened in Church Creek opened five years ago. This weekend the center is hosting numerous events to celebrate the life of Harriet Tubman.
Happy International Women's Day!
