‘It Still Feels Phenomenal’: Thea LaFond Continues Olympic Momentum

A couple of months have passed since Silver Spring’s Thea LaFond won gold for Dominica during the Paris Olympics. MCM talked with LaFond, her family, and elected officials at a special event at our Rockville studios on Wednesday. Soon, she will travel to Dominica to receive the national award of honor.

She continues her Olympic momentum serving as grand marshal at Homecoming for her alma mater the University of Maryland on Friday. And next week, she will be in Dominica for about two weeks to receive the national award of honor — the highest award that can be bestowed upon a Dominican.

LaFond, who lives in Silver Spring and represented Dominica at the Olympics, secured gold in the women’s triple jump in August. It was the first-ever Olympic medal for the island nation in the Caribbean. She was previously a teacher at John F. Kennedy High School, her alma mater, while also competing as an Olympian.
