MCFRS Human Resources Division Chief John Kinsley will be Acting Chief.

After more than 30 years serving the community, Fire Chief Scott Goldstein retired from the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) on Friday.

MCFRS Human Resources Division Chief John Kinsley will be acting chief until a new chief is nominated, per a release from the county.

The county is currently interviewing candidates.

Kinsley has been with the department for 37 years, the release stated. He is “credentialed by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International as a Chief Fire Officer.”

Goldstein is heading west, where he will be a fire chief in Kelso, Washington state.

In an interview with MCM after his retirement was announced, the Montgomery County native reflected on his decades with MCFRS.

Goldstein told MCM it has been the family plan to relocate after his time with MCFRS. He will be moving to Washington state, where his wife Heidi hails from. Their two sons will also come to the nearby area.

Former MCFRS Chief Scott Goldstein will be Chief for Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue in Washington state.

Goldstein had been MCFRS Chief for eight years. When he was a teenager, he was a volunteer firefighter in Kensington.

He led the department during emergencies including the Arrive Silver Spring apartments fire, a Gaithersburg plane crash into power lines, the Potomac Oaks Condominium explosion and fire, and the Friendly Garden Apartments fire and explosion.
