The Annual Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival will host a 5k road race and 1-mile family walk Wednesday, June 19 as part of the weeklong celebration of the holiday.
The road race and family walk will both begin at 8 a.m. on June 19, with a starting point of Bells Mills Elementary School. The event is the only 5k race in the DC area on Juneteenth.
The race is part of the larger Juneteenth Heritage Festival, which begins on Saturday, June 15 with an opening celebration at The Bethesda Theater. The festival hosts multiple events culminating with the Wednesday run and following history lectures taking place at Bette Carol Thompson Scotland Neighborhood Recreation Center.
“We envision this event becoming a preeminent destination for celebrating Juneteenth in the state of Maryland and the DMV,” Festival Chairperson LaTisha Gasaway-Paul said. “Even more importantly, we believe the community connections from growing this Festival will help to improve lives and foster greater understanding in the years ahead.”
Other events taking place throughout the festival include an interfaith breakfast at the Marriott Bethesda, a basketball clinic at Cabin John Middle School, a classic car show, a parade, fireworks and more.
Registration is currently open for the 5k race and family walk. The 5k costs $38 to register, while the family walk is $20.
