A Hyattsville teenager was charged with auto theft unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and various traffic offenses.
The 15-year-old male was released to the custody of his parents.
On Sunday at 1 a.m., Takoma Park Police responded to the 7100 block of Holly Avenue following a report of a stolen car. When the officers arrived, they saw one vehicle speeding and the stolen auto being driven behind it.
The police officers tried to stop both vehicles without success, police said.
When the two vehicles reached Maple and Erie avenues, the drivers went different ways. Police followed the stolen vehicle, and then the driver lost control and ran off the road and into a tree stump near the intersection of Maple and Kennebec. This took place in Ward 1.
The driver was taken into custody. When searched, police found items that could have been used to jump start vehicles, they said.
