Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will continue its Kids Ride Free program through the 2023-24 school year, they announced last Thursday.
The program that began in 2019 offers students between the ages of 5-18 to ride MCDOT Ride On buses, and most Metro buses for free. Students ride for free by tapping their Youth Cruiser Card – which is available for pickup at select schools and libraries – on the farebox.
“This is a great program that is free for all elementary, middle and high school students in Montgomery County,” County Executive Marc Elrich said.“ As a former teacher, I have seen the importance of reliable transportation. Providing free bus rides can make a real difference for children and their families.”
Additionally, MCDOT launched Ride On Trip Planner — a free app that provides live updates of all MCDOT bus routes – allowing for riders to find the fastest route.
MCDOT Director Chris Conklin said in a press release that the program not only aids children finding transportation, but also is an environmentally friendly service.
The service allows riders to mount bikes to the front of the bus if necessary.
Schools interested in being Youth Cruiser Card providers can contact MCDOT and do so.
