Montgomery County Council decided against raising property taxes and increasing the county’s debt in fiscal year 2025, as Council President Andrew Friedson announced Monday during his weekly media briefing.
County Executive Marc Elrich’s proposed $7.1 billion budget included $20 million in general obligation bonds. The majority of the Council voted against the proposal in a non-binding straw vote last week.
The vote to disallow property taxes from being raised was unanimous.
That was just this afternoon for 1 of 5 operating budget hearings. We had nearly 120 testify yesterday, about 60 this afternoon, another 60 registered tonight and more tomorrow for the additional virtual public hearing I added to ensure we hear from everyone who wants to testify. https://t.co/3HNdWDqx18

Friedson spoke highly of the turnout at last week’s public hearings regarding the proposed budget. In five hearings across three days, 255 total speakers shared their opinions, a 35% increase from the previous year.
Friedson also mentioned the MCPD awards ceremony, which honored the officers responsible for saving the life of Sgt. Patrick Kepp.
