Laura Stewart, who garnered 57% of the votes registered for the Montgomery County Board of Education’s District 4 seat, told MCM Wednesday that there is a lot of work to be done.
Stewart defeated incumbent Shebra Evans, who received 41.5% of the vote.
No incumbents were retained their seats, and Stewart said voters probably wanted them ousted, because “they kept hearing the drip of the bad news.
Board of Education members need to deal with teachers who feel unsupported, voters who think the board needs to be more transparent, increased class sizes and budgetary issues.
Following Tuesday night’s presidential elections, Stewart is concerned that the board members may have to deal with the demise of the U.S. Department of Education and cuts to various programs, including Title 1.
Also victorious in unofficial results were Natalie Zimmerman in District 2 and Rita Montoya for the At Large Seat. All three winning candidates were endorsed by the Montgomery County Education Association.
