The head of the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk, shut down the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) over the weekend. USAID, a governmental agency that works with countries around the world to promote social and economic development, was established in 1961.
On Monday, Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), U.S. Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and a small group of other congressional representatives held a press conference at USAID headquarters at the Federal Triangle in Washington. When they attempted to go inside to talk with workers there, they were denied access to the building.
Raskin told USAID workers to follow the advice from the agency to work from home. The congressional delegation at Monday’s press conference plans to file an injunction against the actions of DOGE regarding USAID and any other agencies that may be similarly closed down.
