Police said a 23-year-old man was arrested in a Labor Day shooting that killed a 65-year-old woman and left others with injuries.
Manuel Alejandro Ayala, of Layhill, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder and firearms-related charges, according to the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD).
Police and fire and rescue personnel responded to the 14200 block of Punch St. in the Layhill area at about 7:54 p.m. Monday for a reported shooting, according to MCPD.
Rosa Maria Benitez-Ozuna, 65, of Layhill, was found dead inside a nearby home. Ayala’s mother was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Ayala is a resident of the home, according to police.
Officers found a man in the street with an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police identified Ayala as the suspect and took him into custody without incident. He currently awaits a bond hearing, according to MCPD.
Police previously stated that the shooting is believed to have been a domestic-related incident.
