Ricardo Hernandez was named Acting Principal at Seneca Valley High School following Principal Marc Cohen’s recent announcement that he will retire Dec. 1 from the position he has held for almost 14 years.
Also recently announcing his retirement was Clarksburg High School Principal Edward Owusu. He will step down as of Jan. 1.
According to Montgomery County Public School Director of Office Support and Well Being David Chia, Hernandez will transition into his new role at Seneca Valley following the Thanksgiving holiday.
“I am truly honored and privileged to be a part of this great school community and to have the opportunity to serve and contribute to the success of our students, staff and parents,” Hernandez wrote in a letter posted on Facebook.
Hernandez was Principal Intern at Argyle Middle School and Assistant Principal at Paint Branch High School, where he worked for eight years. He also has been an assistant principal, assistant athletic director, department chair and was a teacher at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School for eight years.
“My ultimate goal is to contribute to an inclusive, supportive, and academically rigorous environment where students can thrive and reach their full potential,” he wrote in the letter.
Hernandez shared that English is his second language and that he grew up in Puerto Rico.
Seneca Valley High School Boosters tweeted, “Many thanks to Dr. Cohen for his years of service. We are excited to welcome Mr. Hernandez as our new acting principal.”
