Libraries Observe Native American Heritage Month

Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) are celebrating Native American Heritage Month in November with two free, educational events open to the community. The programs aim to honor Native American culture and military family contributions.

On Nov. 14 at 6 p.m., the Rockville Memorial Library will present a musical storytelling event by Mwalim “DaPhunkee Professor” Peters, an artist and lecturer from the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. Peters will explore the cultural connections between African and First Nations people, underscoring the foundational influences of these traditions in American culture. Registration is required. The Rockville Memorial Library is at 21 Maryland Ave.

The Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library in Silver Spring will host a discussion on Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. led by Alexandra N. Harris, senior editor at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. Harris will speak about Native American military service, covering highlights from her co-authored book. This event is also free and requires registration. The library is located at 900 Wayne Ave.
