Local Students Win Awards in Stock Market Game

The Maryland Council on Economic Education (MCEE) presented awards to multiple student groups from Montgomery County for their achievements in MCEE’s Stock Market Game.

According to MCEE, the competitions aim to educate students on personal finance and economics in a “fun, competitive atmosphere.” More than 20,000 students from 20 counties across Maryland participated in the challenges, the highest participation in more than 13 years.

Three groups from Montgomery County were honored in the May 15 awards ceremony, with one group coming from each of the three age/grade brackets of elementary, middle and high school.

The three groups all competed in the Stock Market Game category. This game challenged students to manage an imaginary $100,000 portfolio to generate the highest return on investment.

A duo from Albert Einstein High School in Kensington won the high school yearlong state championship in the Stock Market Game. The group, comprised of Henry Alvarenga and Skyler Hills, grew their portfolio by 55%, the highest of any group in any part of the competition.

In the yearlong central region competition, Henry Badraslioglu, Grady Blair, Jacob Lasher and Jonah Richards from The Bullis School in Potomac took first place in the middle school division. They grew their portfolio by 26.5%.

In the spring central region competition, Tyler Bernstein, Lily Hetherington and Ronan Zimzuvadia from the Norwood School won the elementary school division. Their portfolio grew by 1.5%.
