On the day before Easter, supporters of Drag Story Hour joined together twirling brightly colored umbrellas and clad in rainbow clothing so children could enter Loyalty Bookstore in Downtown Silver Spring without incident.
Unlike a previous story hour, there were no protestors. “Two months ago, that was kind of the craziest that I ever saw it. Today was absolutely wonderful. We had so much support. Love definitely conquered hate today,” said Charlemagne Chateau, who read and did movement activities with the young participants.
Councilmember Kate Stewart stood with the Rainbow Defence Coalition activists and noted, “The entire county council has been very supportive of these events.”
According to Loyalty Bookstore’s website, drag story hour includes storytellers “using the art of drag to read books to kids.” It also notes that the hour “captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces like this, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where everyone can be their authentic selves!”
