A man who police said stole a state highway truck, led police on a chase and crashed into 13 vehicles has been indicted by a grand jury.
Flavio Cesar Lanuza, 27, of Laurel, has been indicted by a grand jury on 27 counts in Montgomery County, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO). Charges include first-degree assault, second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting/interfering with arrest, and other related charges, according to MCSAO.
A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson previously confirmed Lanuza is a citizen of Nicaragua who is in the country unlawfully.
According to Maryland State Police, Lanuza was involved in a four-vehicle hit and run crash on Feb. 16 at the I-495 inner loop in Prince George’s (PG) County. He fled the scene and drove into a Park and Ride lot where he went off the road and hit a guard rail.
Lanuza exited his Ford and stole a State Highway Administration vehicle, according to police. He led police on a pursuit through PG and Montgomery counties. He ran off the road near Beltsville Road at Calverton Road, and struck a pole attached to a powerline. Then, he rammed a state police vehicle and several civilian vehicles before entering Priscilla Drive in the White Oak area. The vehicle became disabled on Columbia Pike. Lanuza was arrested at the scene, according to police.
Police said Lanuza allegedly struck 13 vehicles. Police stated one civilian, a Maryland state trooper and a Montgomery County police officer were taken to hospitals for treatment of their injuries.
