A Washington, D.C. man has been charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder after police say he stabbed two people in Silver Spring.
According to the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD), detectives determined that on Monday night, Wayne Riley, 55, was trying to get into a storage area holding cigarettes at the 7-Eleven at 8101 Fenton Street. The store owner saw Riley and recognized him as the same person who stole cigarettes in October, police said. Riley began stabbing the owner with a knife after the owner grabbed him, and police said a customer was also stabbed when he tried to intervene and help. Officers arrived at that point, according to the police.
MCPD said detectives watched store video from October and confirmed that Riley was the suspect who stole cigarettes previously, as the 7-Eleven owner thought.
Online case records show Riley is charged with:
- Two counts: attempted second-degree murder;
- Two counts: first-degree assault;
- One count: theft.
The owner and customer were taken to a hospital. Riley was taken to a hospital with cuts on his hand and is now being held without bond, police said.
