Kyle Olinger was one officer honored in May during an annual Fallen Heroes Memorial Service.
Police said a man who was convicted for shooting an officer in 2003 has been denied parole.
Terrence Green shot Police Officer Kyle Olinger during a traffic stop in Silver Spring in 2003, according to the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD).
As a result of his injuries, Olinger died in 2019. He was 53 years old.
According to police, Green shot Olinger in the neck, which resulted in a severed spinal cord that left Olinger paralyzed from the chest down. Green was sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years.
Olinger served as “an inspiration and testament to resilience” until he died, police stated.
The police department supports the Maryland Parole Commission’s decision. On Tuesday, Police Chief Marcus Jones and Olinger’s widow advocated for Olinger before the commission.
Jones said in a statement, “The crime he committed against the late POIII Kyle Olinger was so destructive that Green should serve out the remainder of his sentence. Green’s actions resulted not only in Officer Olinger’s death but resulted as well in 15 years of torment suffered by Officer Olinger and his family.”
