A Bethesda man was found guilty but not criminally responsible for killing his stepfather last year.
A judge made the ruling Monday in circuit court, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO).
Sergio Koyangbo, 21, was charged in the stabbing death of 46-year-old David Beasley.
In March 2022, police said he was arrested for a a fatal stabbing that happened at a residence in the 5600 block of Lambeth Road in Bethesda.
According to charging documents, Beasley’s wife, who is Koyangbo’s mother, said she was with Beasley in their bedroom when Koyangbo entered and confronted Beasley. Koyangbo accused Beasley of going through his internet search history. Then, Koyangbo pulled a knife from his pocket and stabbed Beasley in the chest.
According to MCSAO, the state challenged a previous finding of not criminally responsible by a state expert, “and retained one of Maryland’s leading forensic psychiatrists” for an independent evaluation.
That doctor also found Koyangbo not criminally responsible.
The state conceded the issue considering the second opinion.
Koyangbo was committed to the Maryland Department of Health after Monday’s hearing. He will stay in a medical facility pending evaluations in the future, according to MCSAO.
