A man was found guilty for a murder that happened last year in the Hillandale area of Silver Spring.

Javier Reyes, 22, of Silver Spring, was found guilty of second-degree felony murder and handgun use in a crime of violence, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO).

He faces up to 60 years in prison for the death of 20-year-old Walter Woods of Takoma Park, according to MCSAO. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 18, 2025.

Woods was pronounced dead at a hospital with four gunshot wounds from a shooting on Hampshire Green Lane in March 2023.

According to MCSAO, an investigation found that Reyes and Woods met at a neighborhood park for a drug deal. Police responded to a 911 call for the sound of shots fired and found Woods lying in the playground area unresponsive.

In the months before the shooting, state police were doing a separate drugs investigation and had Reyes recorded on video selling drugs and talking about having a .380 caliber handgun to sell. He posted a photo of himself on social media holding the gun, which is believed to be the murder weapon, according to MCSAO.
