A Gaithersburg man was convicted in an Election Day collision that killed a married couple crossing the street to vote.
A judge found Davinder Singh, 47, guilty after a bench trial Monday, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO).
He was found guilty of homicide by motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, driving while under the influence of alcohol, and related charges.
Singh faces up to 10 years in prison and $14,000 in fines, per MCSAO. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Oct. 20.
According to the Montgomery County Police Department, on Nov. 8, 2022, Singh was driving on School Drive in Gaithersburg when he struck and killed 65-year-old Miguel Antonio Ortiz and 70-year-old Ana Margarita Ortiz, who were crossing the street to vote at a school voting location. They were a married couple from Gaithersburg.
Singh was arrested in February after returning from overseas.
In a written statement, Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said, “The defendant in this matter has a history of driving while under the influence and the family of these two beloved grandparents has suffered immeasurable loss. We are grateful for the outcome of today’s trial and will ask the judge to impose the maximum penalty under the law at the sentencing hearing.”
