A Silver Spring man was found guilty of attempted murder Wednesday for attacking his landlord in 2020.
Geofrey Gaitan, 31, was convicted of attempted second-degree murder, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO).
According to MCSAO, in April 2020 Gaitan severely beat his landlord — who was 63 at the time — hitting him with wood table legs and stomping on his head. The landlord suffered multiple skull fractures and permanent traumatic brain injury, per MCSAO. It happened in a home on Hastings Drive in Silver Spring. MCSAO stated the near-fatal attack was over a rent dispute.
Two previous trials ended with a hung jury, according to MCSAO, and this was the third time the case was tried in the county’s Circuit Court. Gaitan faces up to 30 years in prison and is expected to be sentenced July 25.
In a written statement, Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said, “Our dedicated attorneys remained committed to seeking justice for this victim and his family. This was an unprovoked attack on an innocent man and the defendant will now be held accountable.”
