A Baltimore man has been sentenced to prison in an Easter Sunday home invasion fatal shooting that occurred last year in White Oak.
Kaleab Berhanu, 21, was sentenced Friday to two consecutive life sentences plus 20 years for the shooting death of 20-year-old Carlos Carter, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO).
Berhanu was arrested in May last year. Per MCSAO, on April 9, 2023, he broke into the Carter’s family home in the 11000 block of Old Columbia Pike and shot Carter multiple times.
In March, Berhanu was found guilty of first-degree murder, home invasion and other charges. In a written statement at the time of conviction, County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said, “This victim was asleep in his bed when he was attacked. He was shot multiple times as he attempted to escape the defendant and fell at the feet of his mother and siblings. We express our deepest condolences to the family, and we thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Peter Larson and Thea Zumwalt for seeing justice served in this matter.”
