A Silver Spring man who had more than 2,000 fentanyl pills seized by police in 2023 was sentenced Thursday to serve 12 years in prison.
Markus Carter, 22, from the Wheaton-Glenmont area, pleaded guilty last year to possession of a large amount of fentanyl, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO).
Carter is pending trial in another case involving distribution of synthetic cannabinoids.
According to police at the time of arrest, in Feb. 2023, officers conducted a traffic stop on the car that Carter was driving for a traffic infraction in the Wheaton-Glenmont area. Police said probable cause was found to search the vehicle. Inside, police found 250 suspected fentanyl pills and other items that indicated drug distribution. On Carter’s person, police found more fentanyl pills and a loaded .45 caliber handgun. Later that evening, a search warrant was executed at Carter’s home, and authorities found another 1,800 suspected fentanyl pills.
