The Maryland state flag will fly at half-staff Thursday by order of Gov. Wes Moore in honor of Civil Rights Heroes Day.
Maryland has observed Civil Rights Heroes Day since 2021 to recognize the courage, sacrifice, and relentless efforts of civil rights and abolition leaders throughout history. The day reaffirms the state’s commitment to being a land of opportunity, hope, and justice for all.
Thursday also marks the 130th anniversary of the death of Frederick Douglass, who escaped slavery in Maryland in 1838 and became a leading voice in the fight for African American civil rights.
The Voices of Maryland’s Civil Rights Activists exhibition is currently on display at the Maryland Center for History and Culture in Baltimore.
