For some, the first paycheck of the new year will be larger. As of Jan. 1, all Maryland employers need to pay $15 an hour, the state’s new minimum wage.
Many employees already receive a $15 minimum wage. The new law applies to employers with 10 or fewer employees.
The increase was signed into law by Gov. Wes Moore on April 11, 2023.
“We applaud Governor Wes Moore’s efforts to help all Marylanders,” said County Executive Elrich. “The minimum wage is ultimately about working people being able to earn enough to put a roof over their heads, feed their families and not have to choose between food on the table and medical visits.”
Elrich previously testified in Annapolis in support of the increased minimum wage.
Under county law, which went into effect this summer, companies with 51 or more employees are required to pay at least $16.70 per hour.
When I signed into law the Fair Wage Act of 2023, I reaffirmed this administration's commitment to building pathways to work, wages, and wealth in the State of Maryland for everyone, including working families – and I make no apologies for doing so. https://t.co/elJTTm2bgo
