With the 4th of July around the corner, Wallet Hub compared two key indicators of patriotism across the 50 states. Maryland ranks as the twelfth most patriotic state in the nation.
The top 10 patriotic states are Virginia, Montana, Alaska, North Dakota, Maine, Oregon, Colorado, Wyoming, and New Hampshire.
WalletHub compared two key indicators, “Military Engagement” and “Civic Engagement,” with subcategories for each, in order to determine each states score. The report gave Maryland a 52.15 score for its patriotic rating. The least patriotic state is Arkansas with a score of 26.87.
Thirteen metrics were considered in the study, including voter turnout, civics education requirements, jury duty participation, and number of active duty military personnel. Maryland ranks first for requiring civics education in the public school system.
Maryland’s other rankings include:
21st – Average number of military enlistees per 1,000 civilian adults
15th – Active duty personnel per 100,000 civilian adults
3rd – Peace Corps volunteers per capita
5th – % of adults who voted in the 2020 Presidential election
29th – Volunteer rate
1st – U.S. History or Civics education requirement
15th – Volunteer hours per resident
21st – AmeriCorps volunteers per capita
