
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 73% of women with children under the age of 18 were working in 2022.
WalletHub ranked the 50 states and Washington, D.C. based on a variety of criteria to determine the best states for working moms. Maryland ranked 16th best, tied with Illinois.
The ranking is based on three conditions working moms need to be successful. They are child care, professional opportunities, and work-life balance. Wallet Hub looked at 17 metrics to create a state’s overall score.
One of the 17 metrics WalletHub used to create a score for professional opportunities is the percentage of families living in poverty. Maryland has the least number of single-mom families with children in poverty in the country.
The top 15 states in the country include Massachusetts (#1), Rhode Island (#2), Connecticut (#3), District of Columbia (#4), Wisconsin (#5), Minnesota (#6), Vermont (#7), New Jersey (#8), Maine (#9), Delaware (#10), Washington (#11), Tennessee (#12), New York (#13), North Dakota (#14), and New Hampshire (#15). Louisiana (#51) was ranked the worst state.
Data used to create this ranking were were collected from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Child Care Aware® of America, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Council for Community and Economic Research, Institute for Women’s Policy Research, National Partnership for Women & Families and WalletHub research.
