Another group from the Maryland Task Force is headed to help out with hurricane rescue efforts in North Carolina.
A group from Montgomery, Howard and Prince George’s counties and the District of Columbia have been assisting in rescue efforts in Georgia and North Carolina for the past two weeks.
Montgomery County Fire Chief Corey Smedley estimated that the team performed “several dozen water rescues,” and used helicopters to help evacuate stranded residents. That team has returned to the area.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requested that they extend their deployment. But instead, Montgomery County Fire Chief Corey Smedley is getting a relief team together. That new 30-member team is expected to head south Tuesday night and provide assistance from Hurricane Helene in North Carolina and possibly other Southeastern states.
