For the third year in a row, Maryland residents will have until July 15 to file and pay their state income taxes. Comptroller Peter Franchot made the announcement Wednesday morning.

Franchot hopes this new deadline will allow Marylanders to smooth out some of the financial bumps still posed by the ongoing pandemic. According to his office, the extensions for the past two years have benefited 600 thousand taxpayers each year. This may have allowed them to manage their finances for basic expenses like shelter and keeping a small businesses open.
Taxpayers do not have to file for the extension, it will be granted automatically.
