Maryland Tax-Free Week starts Sunday, Aug. 11 and runs through Saturday, Aug. 17, State Comptroller Brooke Lierman announced Thursday.
During the tax-free week, the state will suspend the 6% sales tax on clothing and shoes under $100 or on the first $40 for backpacks, according to a release Thursday.
“Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week is a great time for shoppers to save money on essential items and help their budgets stretch further, especially as we continue to grapple with rising prices and consumers feel like they are paying more for less,” Lierman said in a written statement.
It coincides with the time many families shop for items ahead of the school year, the release noted.
During the tax-free period, any single qualifying article of clothing or footwear that costs $100 or less will be exempt from the sales tax, no matter the number of items bought.
Online purchases only qualify for the tax exemption if they are paid and delivered or paid and “accepted for immediate shipment” during the tax-free week, according to the release.
