Denny McCarthy flirted with his first career PGA Tour victory firing a final round 64 — including a blistering 29 on the front nine — at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. McCarthy, a Montgomery County native, ultimately finished in a three-way tie for fourth place at 14 under, four shots back.
“I found something nice the last few days mentally and physically in my swing,” McCarthy said. “I felt really comfortable. I wanted to go out and get the tournament. Nobody’s going to just hand it to me.”
Justin Rose (-18) won the event with a final round 66. It was the Englishman’s 11th career win and first since 2019.
While he didn’t pull off the victory at the iconic course on the Monterey Peninsula, McCarthy made things very interesting, holding a share of the lead twice Sunday during the final round which ended on Monday due to bad weather. His round featured 10 birdies — including eight in the first 11 holes — and two bogeys.
“It’s a nice confidence boost going into the next couple of events,” McCarthy said.
McCarthy’s highest career finish was third place at the 2021 Honda Classic. His career low round as a pro is 61. He currently sits 84th in the world rankings and finished 37th in the 2022 FedEx Playoffs.
McCarthy, 29, was born in Takoma Park, grew up in Rockville and graduated from Georgetown Prep and the University of Virginia.
