Democrat April McClain Delaney and Republican Neil Parrott will vie in November for the U.S. Congressional seat Rep. David Trone currently holds.
Trone chose not to seek re-election and ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate instead.
McClain Delaney received 36% of the Democratic vote in Montgomery County for District 6, defeating Maryland Del. Joe Vogel, who received 25.54% of the vote in unofficial results. 16 Democrats ran for that seat.
McClain Delaney hopes to fill the seat that her husband, John Delaney, held for six years. She served as deputy assistant secretary for communications in the Commerce Department under President Joe Biden.
Gov. Wes Moore congratulated McClain Delaney. noting, “April’s unique experience will make her an effective, thoughtful, and compassionate member of Congress.”
On the Republican ticket, Neil Parrott was the front runner in Montgomery County with 39.81% of the vote to Don Cox’s 27.94%. Parrott ran unsuccessfully for this congressional seat in the previous election.
He served as a state delegate in District 2A and was a a traffic engineer for the Maryland State Highway Administration in Frederick County as well as the Deputy Director of Engineering for the City of Frederick.
District 6 consists of all of Garrett, Allegany, Frederick and Washington counties as well as part of Montgomery County.
Montgomery County Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles ran for this seat but only received 7.05% of the votes in unofficial returns.
In an email, Sayles expressed “my deepest gratitude and appreciation” to her supporters and congratulated McClain Delaney, promising to support the Democratic nominee in the general election.
