The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) announced that there will no longer be free parking on Saturdays at county-operated garages, parking lots and street meters in Downtown Bethesda and Silver Spring starting July 8, according to a press release.
Saturday parking rates and hours will be the same as the rest of the week. Sunday will remain free. Rates and hours are as follows:
Downtown Bethesda:
- On-street: $2.25 per hour from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Surface lot parking: $2 per hour from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Garage parking: $1.75 per hour or less from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Downtown Silver Spring:
- On-street parking: $2 per hour from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Surface lot parking: $1.25 per hour from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Garage parking: $1.25 per hour or less from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Signs have been put up around downtown parking facilities in both Bethesda and Silver Spring in order to alert drivers of the new charges. They can purchase monthly parking passes that they can use for mornings, evenings and weekends. More information on those can be found here.
The extra revenue from Saturday parking will be used to fund projects by the Bethesda Urban Partnership, the Silver Spring Urban District and the Wheaton Urban District to maintain lighting and sidewalks, as well as clean-and-safe crews, to ensure the best experience for residents and visitors of the downtown areas. Revenue will also be used to fulfill more safety and security measures in parking facilities, such as more lighting and cameras, according to the press release.
This resolution was approved by the Montgomery County Council as a part of the Fiscal Year 2024 budget and is already in effect in Downtown Wheaton. More information can be found here.
