MCDOT Awards $800,000 to Nonprofits to Improve Accessibility for Marginalized Residents

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) awarded $800,000 to 23 nonprofit organizations with the goal of increasing accessibility of transportation for disabled, senior and limited-income residents, according to a press release.

The grants are from the Transportation Services Improvement Fund and were approved by the City Council in the Fiscal Year 2023 operating budget.

The Targeted and Specialized Mobility (TSM) Grant Program awarded $640,000 to 17 nonprofits with the intention to fund purchases of vehicles in order to make adjustments to them to accommodate specialized medical equipment and delivery services for essential supplies.

The TSM Operating Grant Program awarded an additional $160,000 to six nonprofits to fund the “day-to-day operating costs” necessary to expand accessibility to transportation.

County Executive Marc Elrich said in a press release that he considers community organizations to be a “lifeline” for marginalized residents by providing them with assistance for anything from finding jobs to medical care.

“With more than 50,000 residents living with disabilities, and a senior population that is expected to increase by more than 35% over the next 15 years, we rely on community partnerships to help us provide transportation solutions that are flexible, forward-thinking and adaptive,” Elrich said.
