Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA) President Jennifer Martin announced in a video Friday morning that “we just learned that it is unlikely there will be layoffs.”
Montgomery County Board of Education will vote to finalize its budget June 11, which is projected to include $30 million in cuts as Montgomery County Council did not fund the school district’s entire budget request.
According to Martin’s statement, “There is still no commitment to prevent furloughs, to honor open contracts.”
Also, she said, “MCPS still insists there is no funding for the Virtual Academy. They also won’t promise that transferred teachers will be working in their certification areas.”
She called on county leaders “to cough up 10 million dollars more to prevent overcrowded classrooms and crushing workloads.”
MCEA members will rally June 10 at Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring at 4:30 p.m.
