McKnight Emails School Communities Impacted by Harassment Investigation

On Monday, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight sent a letter to the Farquhar Middle School community amid an investigation into sexual harassment claims against past principal Joel Beidleman.

McKnight also sent a letter to Paint Branch High School staff, students, and families on Tuesday addressing the change in leadership and unexpected transition. Before Beidleman was put on administrative leave, he was set to begin his position as principal after being promoted.

This community note comes after a Washington Post article revealed 18 reports of workplace abuse and harassment made against Beidleman in the span of 7 years. Several MCPS staff members accuse the district of ignoring those reports and creating a culture of “fear.”

In the letter to Farquhar families, McKnight wrote: “I understand that these allegations have caused a range of emotions within our community, including anger, confusion, and sadness. It is essential that we acknowledge these emotions and work together to navigate through this difficult situation.”

McKnight stated the allegations call for swift action, an independent and objective investigation, and appropriate actions aligned with school policies. In terms of moving forward, McKnight commits to the independent investigators conducting a comprehensive review of bullying, harassment, and retaliation policies. She added that rebuilding trust and open communication will be a focus of the school system’s work.

Dawn Iannaco-Hahn, parent to a rising seventh grader at Farquhar, claims the email was only sent to current staff and not previous staff members who may have left as a direct result of Beidleman’s reported actions.

“Actions speak louder than words,” wrote Iannaco-Hahn. “And so far, MCPS’s track record is writing statements and emails which contain nothing but empty promises and meaningless platitudes. This email from Dr. McKnight is no different.”

In the note to the Paint Branch School Community, McKnight wrote she is fully committed to ensuring a smooth transition. She will meet with school leadership to discuss how to have a successful academic year. Effective Wednesdaay, Pamela Krawczel is the acting principal of PBHS.

MCM has made multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact Beidleman for comment. He has denied the allegations against him to the Washington Post.

On Tuesday the Department of Health and Human services began offering counseling services at the school from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Anyone wishing to report any other information can contact the Maryland Safe School Tipline anonymously online or by calling 1-33-MD-B-SAFE.
