Montgomery County Police coaxed a man down from a building ledge in downtown Silver Spring, Saturday, thereby preventing a possible tragedy.
The Montgomery County Emergency Communications Center received a call around midnight on March 28 from a county garage security employee stating that a man was sitting on a ledge of the seventh floor of a parking garage in downtown Silver Spring, according to a March 31 Montgomery County Police Department news release.
Before police arrived, the man left the garage after a security employee had approached him.
Officers then checked other nearby parking garages and found the man atop the garage on Wayne Avenue in downtown Silver Spring, according to the news release.
When an officer attempted to approach the man as he sat on the ledge of the seventh floor, he again fled, this time jumping about three feet to a connecting roof of a building on Fenton Street.
Four officers followed him onto the roof and attempted to speak with him.
An officer from the 3rd District, who knew the man from previous interactions, and a crisis negotiator officer spoke with him for about 90 minutes, according to the news release.
They were then able to coax him down and take him to a hospital for medical treatment.
