Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will take new steps in response to increased hate and bias incidents in schools.
One new action includes revising fourth and fifth grade curriculums to align with social justice standards, MCPS Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight announced Thursday at Rockville High School.
Additional actions include identifying key experts to respond to incidents, training for all central office employees and all staff, establishing a multicultural advisory group to monitor the anti-racist system action plan, and creating opportunities during the school day to learn about issues.
This year alone, schools are averaging more than one incident per day — a rate tripled from past years — according to McKnight, and incidents of antisemitism against Jewish students have risen almost daily in schools. She said the “unacceptable actions have no place in MCPS.”
McKnight said there is more to come on the steps the school system will take.
