Montgomery County Public Schools announced Thursday it had reached contract agreements with its three unions. But the salary increases will not stand if Montgomery County councilmembers do not agree to a 10-cent property tax increase.
County Executive Marc Elrich’s recommended Fiscal Year 2024 operating budget includes a 10-cent tax increase that would give MCPS its largest-ever allocation at $3.2 billion. That is a $288.5 million increase from the previous year.
County council is holding a work session Friday morning on the proposed budget and could pare the increase down or leave it alone.
Last week, a county council committee moved to reduce some requested funding for Montgomery County Public Schools’ (MCPS) operating budget.
In an enthusiastic press conference Thursday night, school and union officials praised the tentative contracts – all of which include salary increases – and called on the council “to fully fund the budget.”
The three unions are the Montgomery County Education Association, which represents teachers; the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals; and the Service Employees International Union-Local 500.
