Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) named its Teacher of the Year.
Shannon McKenzie, child development teacher at Clarksburg High School, won the title during a ceremony Monday night at BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown.
“I am overwhelmed and humbled and I am so excited to represent MCPS,” McKenzie told MyMCM, “and I am just thrilled that I get to be a teacher here and that I’m being recognized for doing what I love.”
The other finalists were Megan Anderson, fifth-grade teacher at Chevy Chase Elementary School and Eunju (April) Moon, sixth-grade English teacher at Ridgeview Middle School.
McKenzie will now compete for Maryland Teacher of the Year. She will also receive a check from the MCPS Educational Foundation and a one-year auto lease from Fitzgerald Auto Mall.
The event was in-person for the first time since 2019.
Others were awarded as part of the annual Champions for Children event. Awardees included Supporting Services Employee of the Year Kimani Gray, MCPS Rising Star Teacher of the Year Amanda Hammersla, R.A.I.S.E. Champion of the Year Cecilia (Sissy) Natoli, Superintendent’s Community Champion for Children Laura Mitchell, and Beth Thomas, who received the Dr. Edward Shirley Award for Excellence in Educational Administration and Supervision.
