Faced with teacher shortages in multiple areas, MCPS now offers bonuses to teachers who want to specialize in Special Education. The Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA) and MCPS recently reached an agreement on Wednesday, August 24, that will help ramp up their numbers.
The agreement has two parts: A $5000 bonus to teachers who are dual certified to transfer to fill a Special Education vacancy and a quarterly incentive for current Special Ed teachers who assume responsibility for students as a case manager. Compensation varies according to the number of students assigned.
MCPS hopes these incentives will help fill the current 102 full and part time openings in Special Education. Since Friday, August 19, more than 40 applications for Special Education transfer have been received. MCPS will review them for possible acceptance per the new agreement.
