Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) presented 2023’s Evidence of Learning data to the Board of Education on March 28, detailing students’ proficiency in reading and math.
According to MCPS, Evidence of Learning (EOL) data focuses on grade-level proficiency, classroom grades, data from curriculum-aligned assignments and state and national assessments. The data serves as a checkpoint for how students in kindergarten, third grade, sixth grade and ninth grade transition from their previous grade.
The EOL results in mathematics show at least half of students in kindergarten, third grade, sixth grade and ninth grade meeting EOL benchmarks for mathematics. Kindergarteners had the highest EOL, with 70.8% meeting EOL benchmarks. Meanwhile, sixth graders had the lowest with about 48.9% meeting EOL benchmarks.
Looking at how students transition from previous grade levels, MCPS staff notes fewer students achieve mid-year expectations in mathematics.
The EOL results for literacy show half of students in kindergarten, third grade, sixth grade and ninth grade meeting EOL benchmarks. Ninth graders had the highest percentage meeting EOL benchmarks, with 75.5%. Meanwhile, third graders had the lowest numbers, with 52.6% meeting EOL benchmarks.
In light of the EOL data for the 2022-2023 school year, the district will work to improve math and literacy across the system.
According to MCPS, the FY 2024 budget could address these issues. Adding supervisors, instructional staff and coaches could improve math and literacy support in schools. Additionally, the FY 2024 could include more oversight and progress monitoring for schools and professional development opportunities for staff.
