Before the holiday break, students and staff in the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) system are gearing up for their annual week of service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The district’s week of service will take place from Jan. 14-22, 2023, and will feature a variety of service-based learning experiences for students. The week’s opportunities fall in line with the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 16.
MCPS annually recognizes Dr. King with projects and acts of kindness during its January service opportunities. The district moved to make its MLK service opportunities a full week last school year.
This school year, district leaders encourage each school to participate in district-planned Student Service Learning opportunities or host school-wide and class-wide service events.
Schools can also invite local non-profit organizations to support a school service event or delegate planning tasks to school clubs and organizations.
During last year’s fully virtual week of service, students and county residents contributed to charitable causes, created crafts and engaged in community service.
To plan for this year’s service opportunities, MCPS staff engaged in a free one-hour week of service planning workshop on Thursday. Another identical workshop – hosted by WE Schools, a nonprofit that provides service-learning resources and activities – will take place Tuesday. The virtual workshops take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Zoom.
Educators and others looking to serve their community to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy can view planning documents for different service events in this Google folder. Planning tools and timelines, as well as sample school student learning resources, are included.
