Health equity, living in a post Covid-19 world, behavioral health, and substance abuse are just some of the major challenges Maryland’s Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary, Dr. Laura Herrera Scott is tackling right now.
Montgomery Community Media spoke with Herrera Scott about a wide range of issues including the legalization of cannabis set to go into effect on July 1st, and how she views this change from a health perspective. She said her department will track developments with cannabis use and look at trends from other states where cannabis is legal.
Herrera Scott said while Covid-19 has become more normalized, her department is still getting daily reports on the virus. That allows the state to respond if any outbreaks occur. Herrera Scott says Covid-19 remains a threat. She added it is important for people to get their vaccinations and boosters. Residents also should keep up with hand washing and other safety measures put in place during the pandemic.
Governor Wes Moore appointed Herrera Scott acting secretary of HHS last January. Then in March, the Maryland State Senate confirmed her appointment.
Herrera Scott brings a unique background and a wealth of experience to her new job. She has worked in both the private and public sector. The New York native is a medical doctor and has a master’s degree in public health. She has served in both city and state government. She was the Chief Medical Officer at the Baltimore City Health Department. Herrera Scott also worked as Deputy Secretary of Public Health in Governor Martin O’Malley’s administration.
