Metro Eliminates $2 SmarTrip Card Fee for Seniors

Metro announced in December they would no longer charge a $2 fee for Senior SmarTrip cards. Customers age 65 and older may obtain a SmarTrip card at no cost beginning Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Senoirs may travel at reduced fares on Metrorail, Metrobus, and regional buses that accept SmarTrip.

Prior to this change, customers paid $2 to purchase the SmarTrip card. The elimination of the fee removes the need for a third-party payment collection, which is currently a barrier to participation for social service agencies and other organizations to distribute the card.

Eliminating the card fee makes Metro even more affordable for seniors, improves the customer enrollment experience, and enables new partnerships to distribute the cards in the region.

Senior SmarTrip cards are available at Montgomery County public libraries, TriPS store in Silver Spring, mobile commuter store, and the County finance office. A vailid government-issued photo ID with proof of age must be show to obtain a Senior SmarTrip card. Learn more here.
